Charlotte Tree Report
Taking into consideration the tree Canopy protocols of the USDA Forest Services, a project report has been prepared for the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to assess the density of tree canopy that is available in these areas in order to augment urban forest planning.
The Importance of tree canopy
The thick foliage of greenery in urban areas comprising of layers of leaves, branches and stems of trees that creates as an umbrella on the ground is known a Tree Canopy and contribute a lot in reducing air pollution and summer temperatures, improving the water quality, sustaining wildlife habitat and above all adding to the beautification factor. Realizing the importance of Tree Canopy, the enlightened communities could be encouraged for setting a goal for Tree Canopy, its upkeep and expansion.
Estimation of Tree Canopy
Before setting out to fix a goal, it is necessary to estimate what exists. An analysis of the land cover data of Mecklenburg County has revealed that the existing tree Canopy covered 51% of land in the county and 47% within city limits. It is possible to extend it by another 36% spread across the total county and within the city, it is 37%. It has also been identified that establishing new tree canopy on areas that were actually available for tree canopy but has been covered by asphalt or concrete could greatly help in reducing summer temperatures and improve the quality of water.
Authenticated Study conducted
Compared to the earlier studies of 2008, the present study is much more authentic due to improved quality of mapping with the help of LiDAR, a detailed QA/QC process and object based image analysis workflows. The change in results can be attributed to the change in landscapes as well as improved mapping. The shortcoming that has been detected in the 2008 report has also impacted the change.
Target areas for new Tree canopy
Half of the land contained in the parcel database of the county, known as parcel land and 20%-30% of rights of way land (streets right of way and water) are already covered with tree canopy. It is possible to establish tree canopy on another 37% parcel land, 33% on the rights of way (ROW) outside the city and 21% ROW within the city. An overall inclusive approach of establishing tree canopy on all lands irrespective of its nature could remarkably improve the tree canopy of the county.
You can have a look at the detailed report that has done extensive analysis about county land, socio demographic analysis and has shown the way to priority planting. It includes the results of studies conducted for surface temperatures, which have impacted lives adversely in recent years.
If you have the minimum concern for the ecosystem and wish to take some effective measures to improve our living conditions, reach out for this report to find out the easiest way of leaving a mark on the earth. Understand the impact of greenery in our lives and make it a mission to establish more tree canopy for the benefit of humanity.
